COVID Catch-Up Spending

Coronavirus (COVID-19) catch-up premium

Children and young people across the country have experienced unprecedented disruption to their education as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19). At Kingslea, we believe that the ‘Continuation of Learning’ that we provided during the summer of 2020 ensured that the vast majority of our pupils continued to engage with learning either in school or online at home. Click here to see our provision https://kingslea.w-sussex.sch.uk/colfinalfortnight.html
Our provision for pupils was praised time and time again by parents. As one parent said,

"It was exceptionally helpful to have such extensive support from the school – daily videos, work plans and weekly calls helped keep the children busy and in routine, and connected to the school in a way that we simply could not have managed as parents, especially whilst juggling demanding jobs. I can only imagine the level of commitment and organisation that went into making this happen right from day one. You managed to achieve this in an exceptionally calm, pragmatic and positive way.

None of my friends and family we spoke to up and down the country have received anything like the support we have, so we wanted to say a heartfelt thankyou to you and your team. These are days that we and the children will always remember and the positive daily connection that they retained with the school will be one of the real highlights of this experience. "
Another parent said,
"I really cannot put into words how amazing you all are, for so many reasons – for enabling us to work and look after my child in Kingslea Cares, for all of the teaching and videos at home, for all the hours of tireless preparation. It has been such a hard year but we have felt so supported by you all. A big thank you."

We could go on giving example after example of parent appreciation of our work over Summer 2020 but here is one final one

"A huge thank you for all the support and care you have provided for children and families during this crisis. Every step of the way we have felt that the school have been looking ahead, planning ahead and thinking about how best to support the school community through this time. In our opinion you have gone beyond what would be expected to care for families…through Kingslea Cares and providing financial and emotional support to families…to mention but a few ways. The flow of communication that we have received has been excellent throughout; we have felt fully informed about what the changes and next steps are. We are extremely grateful of the effort you have put into this as it really has helped to reduce stress and worries in what is naturally an anxious and difficult time. Thank you - so much."

During June and July 2020, we started planning for a full reopening in September 2020

All our subject leaders identified what we had taught at school in 2019/20, what we had taught via our online ‘Continuation of Learning’ programme and what we hadn’t taught. Subject leaders then adapted our 2020/21 medium term plans for year groups, allowing year groups to effectively plan for 2020/21.
All schools, including Kingslea, have received a coronavirus catch-up premium grant to support our pupils with their learning.
In developing our strategic thinking in how to use the additional funding we asked ourselves two key questions.
1) Which of our children missed out on learning in the summer term?
2) Who would be best to support children who have missed out?
Our answers were:
1) All our children missed out
2) Our class teachers

We therefore
1) Used the updated planning for 2020/21 from the first day of school in September to ensure we were addressing the known gaps
2) Quickly identified other gaps in learning across all classes in maths and English through formative and summative assessment
3) Introduced retrieval practice sessions to focus on identified areas
4) Shared these identified areas with parents on an individual and whole school basis, and with governors
5) Introduced Covid progress meetings, every three weeks, between the Deputy Headteacher and class teacher to identify and plan on an individual, class, year group and whole school level
6) Extended the school day by 30 minutes three days a week from November 2020 to June 2020. This allows us to teach the whole curriculum and for all children to benefit from retrieval practice sessions.

The extended school day is being funded using the Covid catch-up funding with the aim of ensuring all our pupils return to their March 2020 expectation within their year group curriculum / expectations. The children’s attainment will be assessed using the summative assessment programme that we have in place.
We have also identified 21 children who we believe would benefit from small group tuition through the National Tutoring Programme.

Our provision for home learning during quarantine

Virtual learning

If the whole bubble has to quarantine — Learning will be set on Microsoft Teams.  All parents were sent a letter on the 23rd September 2020 with all the relevant information.  Children are able to view, ask questions about and submit their learning all on Microsoft Teams. Three lessons and activities selected by the teachers to fit the Kingslea Curriculum are set each day along with a short video from the teacher to keep in touch and briefly explain the day’s learning.  Lessons will be from the Oak Academy, BBC Bitesize or another high-quality provider.

If individuals quarantine for up to 2 weeks — A link to the Kingslea website is shared where children can find a 10-day English and maths plan for morning activities, and an afternoon grid with choices for activities linked to a video stimulus.  Any work can be sent to the year group email address ([email protected]) which will be monitored by Miss Nicholls.  If a child is only off for a couple of days (e.g.) awaiting test results, then they complete only those days of learning.
