Art

Intent

At Kingslea Primary school we aim to harness and develop each child’s creativity through an inspiring and challenging Art curriculum.
Our Art curriculum develops creativity, sets challenges, engages and inspires children to gain the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Children will also develop their understanding of their own and others cultures and heritages through the study of a diverse range of artists.  By providing a curriculum with effective teaching, a carefully considered sequencing of skills, variety of lessons and experiences will enable children to reach their full potential.

Implementation

The children are given opportunities to explore a wide range of materials, tools and techniques in 2D, 3D and virtual form and learn about a variety of artists.

Children learn key knowledge, vocabulary and skills and these are built upon each year. Art is carefully linked to the Learning Journey, and children experiment, explore and plan in their own sketchbooks, which progress with them through the school.  Each year they will continue to build on and develop their proficiency in drawing, painting, sculpture, printing and textiles. They will build upon an art vocabulary year by year based on the elements of line, colour, pattern, form and texture. They will apply this language when evaluating and analysing their own creative work and the work of others.
Alongside this, the children will increase their knowledge of great artists, craft-makers and designers. They will research and appreciate artists from a variety of historical periods and also from different cultures. Once a year there is an opportunity to focus on an Art project in greater depth  when the whole school ‘Takes One Picture’ and uses this as a springboard to produce not only their own creative work, but to inspire creativity in other areas of the curriculum.

Each year, Kingslea Primary School holds a ‘Big Draw’ event. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters are invited to spend an enjoyable hour taking part in a range of art activities set up around the school. Three sessions are available both during the day and in the evening to enable everyone who wishes to come along. When it was last held over 200 parents attended!

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world.

It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. By the time children leave Kingslea Primary School they have developed a passion for art and creativity, working both independently and collaboratively. They have grown in confidence when using a range of tools and techniques, becoming artists that can apply the skills and knowledge that they have developed throughout the years.

The Big Draw

In October each year, Kingslea Primary School holds a ‘Big Draw’ event. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters are invited to spend an enjoyable hour taking part in a range of art activities set up around the school.
Three sessions are available both during the day and in the evening to enable everyone who wishes to come along.
