Governors

Role of Governors at Kingslea Primary School

School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. Governors appoint the headteacher and deputy headteacher. It is governors who hold the main responsibility for finance in schools, and it is governors who work with the headteacher to make the tough decisions about balancing resources.

Each individual governor is a member of a governing board, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors may not act independently of the rest of the governing board; decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing board.
The role of the governing board is a strategic one - its key functions are to:
▪    set the aims and objectives for the school
▪    set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
▪    set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
▪    monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
▪    be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend).”
Further information on the role of governors may be found at: http://www.nga.org.uk or http://schools.westsussex.gov.uk/Services/3164

Aims for the Governors

Committee Structure & the role of each committee

Each governor has an area of school development that they are responsible for monitoring.  The monitoring priorities are taken from the school development plan, which is a strategic document drawn up each academic year to ensure that specific challenges and issues are addressed.
Governors are expected to make regular visits to the school to observe their particular area of development, meeting with staff and pupils as necessary and reporting on their findings.
The Kingslea Governing Body consists of three sub-committees:
  • Curriculum Standards & Policy
  • Resources
  • Safeguarding
All committees meet on a termly basis and report to the Full Governing Body.
