Parent Visits/Workshops

At Kingslea Primary School, we are proud to regularly invite parents to workshops and into the classroom to support their child’s learning at home. For those parents who are unable to make our workshops, information from the workshops can be found and downloaded below.
All parents are welcome to attend parent workshops. We are continually trying to meet the needs of our pupils and parents : therefore, if you have any feedback regarding the workshops you have attended or future workshops, please see Mr Conway.

Big Draw

WOW! WOW! WOW! Just like Glastonbury, the Big Draw becomes more popular every year. Thank you to Mrs Kemp and Miss Evans for setting up such an amazing event. This year’s theme was ‘Every picture tells a story’.Over the three sessions, more than 250 parents visited school to spend some very special time being creative with their child. Whatever the medium used, be it collage, sketching, painting or street chalk everyone wanted more!

Dad's Day

Over 200 dads regularly attended our annual Dads’ Days. We run two workshops simultaneously, one for Reception/Year 1 and Year 2 and the other for Years 3–6.

Topics to date have included fractions and the building blocks of self-esteem. After the workshops, the dads spend time in class with their child. If they show excellent focus and good behaviour then the dads can join their children in the playground for breaktime!

Grandparents Day

We're  not sure is more excited by our Grandparents’ Day: the children or the grandparents! Many grandparents make a special trip to Horsham for this annual day, and we very much appreciate the efforts of all who attend. We also love to hear their positive comments about how happy their grandchildren are at Kingslea.

Maths

Thank you to the 200 parents who attended our Math’s Workshop, either during the school day or in the evening.. An amazing turnout and the feedback was very, very positive. Splitting the workshops into Reception to Year 3 and Years 4 to 6 seemed to work well and the children loved having you in their classrooms.  We hope you found it useful and feel more informed about how to help your child with maths at home. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Coles, Miss Burnett or Miss Nicholls.

Phonics & Reading Workshop - Reception Parents

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Phonics & Reading Workshop. We hope you found it useful and feel more informed about how to help your child with reading at home. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of the Reception team.

Reading Workshop and Classroom Visit

Another fantastic turnout at our reading meeting. We ran both morning and evening meetings for KS1 and one for KS2. Parents heard how we teach reading (decoding and comprehension) and had the opportunity to have a go at the KS1 or KS2 SATS test from 2017. That really opened parents' eyes to the demands of the curriculum. Parents then visited their children in class to take part in a guided reading or whole-class reading lesson. A wonderful morning and evening.

SATS - Y5 & Y6

Another fantastic turnout with over 80 parents attending. Thank you to all the year 5 and 6 parents who attended Ms Palmers' and Miss Nicholls’ SATS workshop. We hope you found it useful having a workshop especially devoted to SATs, especially with all the recent changes,  and that it has helped you to prepare and support your children as they move through Year 6 and onto secondary school.
Having a go at SATs-style questions and the resource pack certainly seemed to be very popular. As we said at the meeting, we will keep you updated regarding reporting arrangements for the end of the year. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of the Y6 team.

In this video we will explain how Reading, Writing, Phonics and Handwriting is taught, as well as giving you practical examples and ways to support your child with these at home.
The video is quite long, so please don’t feel you need to watch it in one go. The video will be available to be viewed all year, so you are able to re-watch and refer back to it whilst your child is in Reception.

First Section

Second Section

The first section is on reading and phonics. In this section we discuss reading development, what phonics is, how a phonics session looks and we also teach you the sounds and actions that your children will learn at school. We share some phonics games we play at school and there is a video of phonics in Reception. We also look at how the phonics knowledge the children have learnt helps them with their reading both in and out of school.
The next section is on writing and physical development. We look at the writing development stages and how children apply their phonics knowledge when writing. We show you how children may write words using their phonics knowledge and test yours too! We will look at how gross motor and fine motor skills support writing and give you some example activities to do at home.

Finally

Lastly we look at handwriting. We explain the typical handwriting development and the handwriting style that we teach at Kingslea.
There is everything you need in your pack, so please refer to this throughout.
We hope that you find the video informative and useful. We understand that teaching your child to read and write is important and daunting, but we know that you want to help them as much as you can. Please come and ask us any questions you may have.
