The teaching of languages is an integral part of learning at Kingslea. Our language teaching aims to help children foster an interest in learning other languages in a fun and enjoyable manner, stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about languages and other cultures, laying the foundations for further language teaching at Key Stage 3.
Implementation
Language lessons are taught and timetabled throughout Years 3 to 6. Lessons are engaging and often cross-curricular. (Currently, French is taught in Year 3 & 4, Spanish in Year 5 and Mandarin in Year 6.) As these are three of the main languages learnt by our children in KS3.
At Kingslea we teach each language by developing accurate pronunciation and intonation therefore listening to and speaking the spoken language is a key part of all language lessons. The children really enjoy their language lessons due to being taught a range of songs, rhymes and stories to enhance their understanding. The children in year 5 have the opportunity to further their skills in MFL by learning Spanish. In Year 6 we are advancing the children by being immersed in Mandarin, which is taught by a visitor to the school whose first language is Mandarin.
Impact
At Kingslea we believe in an increasingly globalized world, intercultural competence is essential, and that it is important to awaken children’s interests in other people and cultures at a time when they are open and receptive.
Learning another language not only provides practical communication skills, but has a unique role to play in developing cognition, literacy and cultural knowledge. Children find the lessons fun and creative; it prepares them for the world of work and helps with the transition to secondary school.
