At Kingslea Primary School, we teach phonics sessions from Reception to Year 3 in discreet sessions, and revise our learning in Y4 –Y6 rather than follow one specific scheme. We do however use Song of Sounds to learn actions alongside the sounds. Phonics is taught alongside year group spelling patterns and is vital to support children’s reading and writing skills.
Implementation
We follow Letters and Sounds which is the systematic phonics programme published by the government. We use a range of resources, websites and games to enhance our teaching. We aim to instil a love of learning to read and write and feel this is achieved through the active and engaging sessions which are delivered to our children. Children work through phases within differentiated phonics groupings, led by class teachers and teaching assistants. As children move through the phases, they learn the alternate spellings for each sound, for example ai / ay / a-e.
Impact
Our children love their phonics sessions and the quality of their reading and writing shows that they use and implement them in their work.
Year after year our phonics screening check is above the national average.
