Physical, Social, Health & Education

Intent

Known to children as: Learning for Life
At Kingslea Primary School we place a high emphasis on children’s personal, social and emotional learning.  We aim to develop knowledge, skills and attributes that our children need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain. We also aim to install values in our children and as such focus on the Core4; Respect, Perseverance, Creativity and Collaboration. The intent of these values is to create resilient children who are equipped to deal with an ever-changing world. Learning is carefully planned to build upon skills and knowledge year upon year and is fully in line with the PSHE Curriculum that was introduced by the Department for Education in Summer 2021, it is also compliant with the regular updates provided by the Dfe and PSHE Association.

Implementation

Across each year, children learn through different topics such as ‘making decisions and having choices’, ‘bullying and conflict resolutions’, ‘personal organisation’ and ‘relationships’.  Through these topics children will encounter areas for discussion such as what it means to show respect and how to apply strategies to difficult situations. Assemblies at Kingslea place high emphasis on PSHE such as kindness and respect whilst also teaching children about worldwide issues. We see PSHE has a fluid subject, and PSHE sessions are adapted to meet the needs of the children at the current time. Children learn skills, knowledge and vocabulary that is built on over time, to be able to make cross curricular and every day links with their PSHE learning. PSHE is also not just in the classroom, and a whole school emphasis is put on the subject so children will learn about PSHE during assemblies, playtimes and lunchtimes.  We have also introduced the Core4 recently and are feeding the skills of Respect, Perseverance, Creativity and Collaboration into the Learning for Life curriculum. Children are also taught how to keep themselves safe using resources from the NSPCC to ensure they understand who can help them if they feel unsafe.

Pupil Governors

We feel that it is important for pupils to have the opportunity to voice opinions and have their ideas heard. For this reason we have a Pupil Governing Body. Pupils within each class have the opportunity to apply to become a Pupil Governor to represent their class. Our Pupil Governors change after half an academic year, to ensure as many pupils as possible have the opportunity to have their say. The Pupil Governors meet weekly to discuss both school and community issues raised by their peers. It is the job of the Pupil Governors to make things happen and discuss how ideas can be made into reality. The Pupil Governors are enthusiastic, motivated and determined when it comes to generating ideas to solve problems.

Impact

Through our teaching of personal, social and health education (PSHE) we aim to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead a healthy and independent life.

. They will have gained life skills that will ensure they become well rounded and resilient learners.

By having a whole school approach to PSHE, we aim for our pupils to develop attributes and qualities they need to thrive as individuals and members of a community. The impact of our PHSE curriculum can be seen in the everyday actions of our children, the feeling you can get when you walk in the school and the comments made by parents, visitors and members of the public on our children’s behaviour and thoughtfulness. All children are supported to access learning at their own pace and skills are carefully built in to the wider curriculum. For example, in many year groups Team work and collaborative skills are discussed in PSHE and these are practiced in PE.

Our children show resilience, empathy towards others and are inclusive, all products of PSHE at Kingslea.
